"Compelling, ambitious, relevant," that's how the BAFTA judges summed up ITV Elaine Willcox's coverage of the Morecambe Bay Tragedy.

In an 18-month investigation, Elaine Willcox went to China's Fujan province to interview 17 of the bereaved families and also the mother of the cockle pickers' gangmaster, who was convicted of the manslaughter of 21 of the immigrants.

Having been refused a journalist visa, Elaine travelled as a tourist, risking arrest and deportation. Her bravery secured exclusive access to the story and her report became the cornerstone of a half hour news programme screened by ITV Granada.

Elaine and her news colleagues beat the BBC's Ten O'Clock News, Channel Four News and ITV News in the "News Coverage" category, making it the first ever BAFTA win for a regional news programme.
